Martinez Advances to Second Day at CKLV
Dec. 4, 2015

LAS VEGAS – Sophomore Geordan Martinez is the only member of the Boise State wrestling team still alive at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the conclusion of the opening day of the tournament, Friday.

Martinez, the nation’s 18th-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, advanced to the quarterfinals before running into fifth-ranked Lavion Mayes of Missouri. Martinez dropped the bout via major decision (13-5), falling to the consolation bracket.

Prior to the loss, Martinez won a pair of matches, knocking off Ohio State’s Cody Burcher (8-4), and No. 19 Alex Griffin of Purdue, 6-5. He will square off against Brown’s Steven Galiardo Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals.

Martinez and Mayes previously wrestled in the 141-pound finals of last year’s Southern Scuffle, a bout that also went to the Mizzou wrestler (6-4).

Redshirt senior Chris Castillo won his first two matches of the tournament, advancing to the Round of 16. But he dropped his next two, falling out of the tournament.

Redshirt junior Rami Haddadin lost his opening match, then strung together three-straight decisions to make it to the consolation round of eight. His second loss of the day came to 10th-ranked Zeke Moisey of West Virginia, a fall in 6-minutes, 34-seconds.

The second day of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational is scheduled to begin Saturday at 10 a.m. Live results and live video coverage are each available at FloWrestling.
