Broncos Conclude Cliff Keen with 13.5 Points

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Two Boise State wrestlers fell in the first round of eight in the consolation bracket to conclude the Broncos’ run at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational prematurely. Boise State tallied 13.5 points, and currently sits in a tie for 24th with Oregon State.
Redshirt senior Austin Dewey (174) and redshirt junior Josh Newberg (133) both went 2-2 at one of the nation’s premier wrestling tournaments. Dewey began the day with a technical fall over Joe Salvi (18-0) to advance to the round of 16. There, Dewey lost to the nation’s fifth ranked wrestler, Brian Realbuto of Cornell.
Dewey battled back with a 4-0 decision over Jairod James of Kent State in the second round of 16 in the consolation bracket. Facing the tournament’s eighth seed, Ryan Christensen of Wisconsin, Dewey fell in 4:23 to end his run at the tournament.
Newberg battled back from an opening round loss for two straight victories before falling to Wisconsin’s Eli Stickley in 6:22 in the first round of eight in the consolation bracket.
Demetrius Romero opened the tournament with a technical fall over Rodney Williams of Oregon State (16-1) at 165 pounds. Romero would lose a 16-1 technical fall against the nation’s No. 2 ranked wrestler, Isaac Jordan of Wisconsin.
The redshirt freshman would lose his first match in the consolation bracket to end his run at the tournament.
Boise State will return to Boise for the team’s home opener against Utah Valley, Dec. 10, at Bronco Gym. The dual will start at 7 p.m. (MT).
