Back-and-Forth Dual Goes to UVU
Nov. 28, 2015

OREM, Utah – The Boise State wrestling team fought back from an early deficit, but ultimately fell to Utah Valley 22-12 at the PE Building, Saturday.

The Broncos dropped to 2-2 on the season, while the Wolverines improved to 3-3.

The opening two matches of the night – at 125 and 133 pounds – each went the Wolverines’ way via major decisions, and Utah Valley jumped out to an 8-0 lead.

After falling behind, Boise State won four-consecutive decisions to take a 12-8 lead. Jake Velarde, who narrowly avoided a takedown in the closing seconds of the second period, picked up a 3-2 decision to start the Broncos’ run.

Geordan Martinez, ranked 18th-nationally at 149, followed with a 6-5 decision. He beat the clock with an escape as time expired in the third period to earn the one-point victory and get the Broncos within two (8-6).

Chris Castillo gave the Broncos the lead with a 7-5 decision at 157, and Taylor West extended the advantage with a 6-4 win at 165, but Boise State dropped each of the final four matches and, ultimately, the dual with UVU.

Boise State has lost in each of its last four trips to Utah Valley, the last win coming Feb. 14, 2004 (31-4).

The Broncos opened the season with four-straight duals on the road, but the next four will be at home – starting with North Dakota State, Jan. 15. Between now and then, however, Boise State has a trio of tournaments, starting next week with the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 4-5).
