Martinez Falls at NCAA Championships
March 20, 2015

ST. LOUIS - Boise State freshman Geordan Martinez dropped his opening match of Friday's evening session at the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Scottrade Center, falling one victory shy of earning All-America status.

Martinez, who went 3-2 at the tournament, would have been just the second true freshman in school history to garner All-America accolades with a win Friday night. Kirk Smith accomplished the feat at 184 pounds in 2008, finishing eighth at the national championships.

Martinez's second loss of the tournament came to No. 14 seed Dean Heil of Oklahoma State, 9-5.

The eight seed at 141 pounds, Martinez went 1-1 on the opening day of the tournament. After defeating David Pearce of Drexel in his opening match (6-4), Martinez dropped to the wrestle-back following a 6-4 loss to ninth-seeded Anthony Abidin of Nebraska.

Martinez won each of his matches in Friday's early session, pinning Appalachian State's Matt Longo in 1:40, and knocking off Mike Morales of West Virginia, 6-4 (SV-1).

He finished his debut season at Boise State with a record of 30-7, including eight pins, three major decisions and three technical falls. His victory at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships marked just the second conference title for a Bronco freshman in school history.

Redshirt senior Steven Hernandez also competed at the NCAA Championships, falling in each of his two matches on the opening day of the tournament.
