Martinez Still Alive at NCAAs

ST. LOUIS - Boise State freshman Geordan Martinez is still alive at the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championships after going 1-1 on the opening day of competition at the Scottrade Center, Thursday. Redshirt senior Steven Hernandez was eliminated from the tournament after dropping each of his two matches.

Martinez, the No. 8 seed at 141 pounds, defeated David Pearce (Drexel), 6-4, in his opening-round match, before falling to No. 9 seed Anthony Abidin of Nebraska (6-4).

Now in the wrestle-back, Martinez is scheduled to square off against Mike Longo (Appalachian State) Friday morning.

Hernandez opened the tournament with the No. 8 seed at 157 pounds, John Boyle of American. Hernandez fell via 6-2 decision, then dropped a 9-0 major decision in the wrestle-back to No. 9 seed Joseph LaVallee (Missouri).

Friday's first session is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. MT. The second- and third-round wrestle-backs are slated to take place on the outside mats.
