Road Trip Ends in Loss to Cal Poly
Feb. 14, 2016

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Boise State wrestling team closed out its three-dual Pac-12 road trip through California Sunday, falling 23-15 to Cal Poly in an outdoor match at the University Union Plaza.

The loss is the sixth-straight for the Broncos (3-8, 1-3 Pac-12), who travel to Oregon State next week for the team’s final regular-season contest.

Things were looking up for Boise State early in the dual, as redshirt seniors Chris Castillo and Taylor West won 5-4 decisions at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. But the Mustangs (3-9, 1-4) responded with four-straight wins, including a technical fall at 184.

Trailing 14-6 with four matches remaining, the Broncos were going to need to either win out or pick up bonus points to keep Cal Poly winless in the Pac-12. Redshirt junior Rami Haddadin did his part, picking up a 6-0 decision over David Gonalez at 125.

Carson Kuhn fell in the ensuing match however, just the third of his career at 133 pounds, and then the Mustangs’ Colton Schilling registered a pin over Jake Velarde at 141 (1:45), and Cal Poly clinched the win.

Sophomore Geordan Martinez closed out the afternoon with a pin of his own, sticking Jacob Leon in 1:39 for his 14th-consecutive victory.

Martinez and Castillo were each a perfect 3-0 on this week’s road trip.

Next week’s match-up with the Beavers is the Broncos’ final test before the Pac-12 Championships (Feb. 27). Boise State and Oregon State are slated to hit the mat for the Border War at noon MT, and the dual will be televised on Pac-12 Oregon.
