Broncos Split Doubleheader in Final Homestand

BOISE, Idaho – In the final homestand of the season, the Boise State wrestling team split a doubleheader against Cal Poly (6-10, 1-4 Pac-12) and Arizona State (10-4, 4-1 Pac-12), Sunday at Bronco Gym.

Cal Poly Recap

The Broncos (2-10, 1-4 Pac-12) opened the dual with back-to-back bonus point victories at 125 and 133 pounds, and held on to win a 23-16 victory over Cal Poly. The win was Boise State’s first Pac-12 victory since Nov. 22, 2015.

Will Bardezbain won a 21-4 technical fall for his first career Pac-12 victory. The win ended a six match losing streak for the junior, dating back to Dec. 18, 2016.

At 133 pounds, Josh Newberg ended a 10-match losing streak with a 13-4 major decision over Yoshito Funakoshi.

Dakota Wall (149) avoided a takedown in the waning seconds of the first overtime period in his match against Joshy Cortez. Wall added an escape and a takedown in the tie breaker overtimes to win the first dual match of his career.

The Broncos added wins from Fred Green (157), Demetrius Romero (165) and Austin Dewey (174) to clinch the victory over the Mustangs.

Green’s technical fall over Joe Granger gives him 12 bonus point victories this season.

Romero’s win gives him 20 on the season in his debut campaign for the Broncos.

Arizona State Recap

Boise State picked up a pair of victories in a 39-6 loss to Arizona State.

The Sun Devils won eight matches by bonus point victory.

Newberg came alive in the final 30 seconds of his match against Ted Rico to pull away with a 17-10 decision.

In his first dual match of the season, redshirt sophomore Keavon Buckley (197) won a 9-3 decision over Austyn Harris.

The Broncos return to action, Feb. 26 at the Pac-12 Championships in Palo Alto, Calif.
