Broncos Claim 23-15 Victory Over CSU Bakersfield
BOISE, Idaho - After giving up points in the first three bouts of the night, the Boise State wrestling team rallied to a 23-15 win over conference foe CSU Bakersfield at Taco Bell Arena, Friday. The win was one of two for the Broncos as the gymnastics team also won their competition against BYU, 196.325-195.125.
Four of the six Boise State victories also earned the team bonus points as George Ivanov, Jake Swartz and Cody Dixon each tallied major decisions and Jason Chamberlain cruised to a win by technical fall.
Chamberlain's 149-pound bout marked the first win for Boise State on the night, cutting the Roadrunner's lead to 12-5. The result is the redshirt senior's third tech fall of the season, all of which have come in the last four matches.
George Ivanov followed with a 9-1 major decision against Adam Fierro at 157 pounds, taking him to 18-5 this season. The 18th-ranked Ivanov reached the 10-win plateau in dual matches with his victory, sitting at 10-2.
Boise native Holden Packard would make it three-in-a-row after that pulling the Broncos even at 12-12. Packard and CSUB's David Meza each were kept off the scoreboard through two periods but Packard had the advantage after riding the entire second period. An early escape in the third would extend the lead and a takedown with four seconds left would seal it as the sophomore won 4-0.
A tough 5-4 loss for Scott Bacon would put the Roadrunners ahead once again but the Bronco heavyweights were poised to come on strong.
Jake Swartz and Cody Dixon combined for a pair of major decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. Swartz, who leads the team in major decisions, notched his ninth of the season and the fourth in the last five matches, extending his win streak to 13. Dixon major was good for his 10th win of the season.
Junior J.T. Felix would ensure the Boise State victory with an 11-7 win over Sammy Cervantes to end the match.
Boise State (7-5, 3-1 Pac-12) will be back in action, Sunday against Stanford at noon. In honor the Super Bowl Sunday any fan wearing NFL gear will earn a $2 admission.
