Broncos Lose Close Dual to Sun Devils
Jan. 23, 2015

BOISE, Idaho - It came down to the last match and the highest-ranked individual on the Boise State wrestling team, but the Broncos didn't get the result they needed and ultimately fell 20-18 to Pacific-12 Conference rival Arizona State Friday in front of 2,846 fans at Taco Bell Arena.

Trailing 20-15, the Broncos needed a pin from freshman Geordan Martinez, ranked as high as fifth nationally at 141 pounds. He won the match via a 5-3 decision over Matt Kraus, but the Broncos fell three points shy of earning a team victory, dropping a dual at Beauty and the Beast for just the fourth time since its inception in 2003.

Boise State (2-5, 0-2 Pac-12) is now 12-4 all-time at the annual event.

ASU (5-3, 1-0 Pac-12) won the opening match of the evening at 149 pounds via major decision, but the Broncos won the next two, moving in front of the Sun Devils. Steven Hernandez (157) earned a 3-1 decision over Oliver Pierce, and Chris Castillo picked up six points via injury default over Joel Smith.

Arizona State won the next four matches, including an upset of No. 20 Cody Dixon at 197 pounds, to build an 11-point advantage with three matches remaining.

The Broncos closed the dual with three-consecutive victories, but sans bonus points, came up just short against their conference foe.

Carson Kuhn (125) posted a 5-3 decision, followed by a 9-8 decision from Michael Cook (133), and then Martinez closed out the evening.

Kuhn has won three-consecutive matches and Cook has won each of his last four.

Boise State will continue its homestand next week, hosting Stanford, Feb. 1 (Sunday). The Broncos and Cardinal are scheduled to hit the mat at 1 p.m.
