BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Boise State wrestling team dropped its opening dual of the weekend, falling 19-12 to South Dakota State at Frost Arena, Friday.

The Broncos (2-3) opened the dual with a victory at 133 pounds, as freshman Michael Cook recorded a 6-5 decision over Bubba Smith. But South Dakota State (6-5) won the next four matches - two by major decision - to build a lead they would not relinquish.

The Jackrabbits were docked a team point following the bout at 165 pounds, and what should have been a 14-3 SDSU advantage was cut to 13-3.

Boise State won two of the next three matches, closing the gap to just seven with two matches remaining. Austin Dewey posted a 4-2 decision over David Kocer, and Cody Dixon notched a 5-4 decision over No. 14 Nathan Rotert.

Trailing 16-9, the Broncos were going to need to win the final two matches and pick up bonus points in the process. But a loss at heavyweight clinched the dual for South Dakota State.

Carson Kuhn won the final match of the evening, dropping Isaac Andrade, 7-0.

Boise State will look to earn a split on this weekend's road trip, squaring off against North Dakota State on Sunday. The Broncos and Bison are slated to hit the mat at 1 p.m. MT, and a live stream of the dual is available for purchase at
