Broncos Finish Virginia Duals with 4-1 Record

HAMPTON, Va. - The Boise State wrestling team was undefeated during the second day of competition at the Virginia Duals, Saturday, defeating Army, North Dakota State and Kent State to take fifth in the 16-team field. The Broncos were 4-1 for the tournament with their only loss coming against No. 19 Virginia.

Jason Chamberlain, George Ivanov, Jake Swartz and J.T. Felix each went a perfect 5-0 during the tournament. Felix was the leading point-getter for the Broncos, recording three major decisions and one pin. Swartz racked up two major decisions and a tech fall while Chamberlain recorded one major decision and one tech fall.

Brian Owen also had a solid performance, finishing with a 4-1 record.

Boise State started the day with a 24-12 route of Army with the Broncos winning seven of the ten bouts. Chamberlain, Swartz and Felix each collected bonus points with major decisions against their opponents to lead the way.

The next match against North Dakota State would not be as easy. After the first three bouts the Broncos were in an 11-3 hole with the three points coming from Owen's 3-2 decision against Joshua Rodriguez. That deficit was quickly erased after Jason Chamberlain earned a tech fall at 149 pounds followed by an easy six points for George Ivanov who won by forfeit.

The match would go back-and-forth the rest of the way heading into the final bout, when NDSU held a two -point lead with the heavyweights remaining. Felix stepped onto the mat for the Broncos and asserted his will in an 11-3 major decision to give his team a 22-20 win.

In the final match of the day, Boise State faced Kent State in a dual to decide fifth place. Although no Bronco picked up bonus points, the team won eight of the ten bouts to cruise to their third victory of the day, 27-12.
