Dixon, Felix Help Send Broncos to Victory

Jan. 12, 2014

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Boise State wrestling team closed its three-dual road trip with a commanding 35-6 victory over Cal Poly at the Mott Athletics Center, Sunday.

Having already lost the first two duals of the swing through California, seniors Cody Dixon (197) and J.T. Felix (285) helped assure that there would be no sweep.

With Boise State already leading 10-6, Dixon and Felix recorded back-to-back pins, virtually putting the dual away. Dixon registered his first pin of the season at 1:14 over the Mustangs' Nicolas Johnson, and Felix followed with a pin at 1:12 over Tyler Hecht.

The victory was fifth-ranked Felix's sixth by fall this season.

Rami Haddadin earned a 3-2 decision over Britain Longmire in the ensuing match, clinching the victory for the Broncos.

Boise State is now 2-3 on the season, and 2-2 in the Pac-12.

After dropping the first match at 149 pounds, Boise State received back-to-back decisions from Holden Packard (157) and Steven Hernandez (165) to take a 6-3 lead. Packard defeated Xavier Johnson (10-3), and Hernandez knocked off Sohrab Movahedi (3-1).

The Mustangs tied the dual with a decision at 174, but seventh-ranked Jake Swartz earned a major decision over Kent Beecham at 184 (14-3) to put the Broncos back in front.

Ben DeMeulle received a forfeit at 133, and Travis Himmelman closed the dual with a major decision over Jacob Leon at 141 (9-0).

Boise State returns home this week, taking on North Dakota State Friday (Jan. 17) at 7 p.m. The Broncos will be competing alongside the Boise State gymnastics team, part of the annual Beauty and the Beast event.
