Jan. 2, 2015

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Boise State freshman wrestler Geordan Martinez fell in the championship match of the Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena, Friday. Martinez, who had recorded four-straight bonus-point victories, suffered his first loss of the tournament in the finals to finish runner-up at 141 pounds.

After notching three-straight major decisions and a pin, Martinez fell via 6-4 decision to eighth-ranked Lavion Mayes of Missouri.

Martinez opened the Southern Scuffle with back-to-back major decisions on the first day, then opened the second day with another one, knocking off 20th-ranked Anthony Abidin of Nebraska, 10-2. Abidin had handed Martinez his first loss of the season - in his debut match as a collegiate wrestler - at the Cowboy Open.

Martinez then followed with a pin of 10th-ranked Zach Horan of Central Michigan in 1-minutes, 41-seconds.

Steven Hernandez (157) and Cody Dixon (197) each also made it to the second day of the Scuffle.

Hernandez opened Friday with a pin of Gregory Flournoy (George Mason) in 2:53, but fell in the following match via a 3-1 decision to North Carolina's Christopher Mears.

Dixon was eliminated in his first match of the day, falling to 19th-ranked Shane Woods of Wyoming, 4-3.

The Broncos are back in action next week, traveling to face Northern Colorado, Jan. 9. The teams are slated to hit the mats at 7 p.m. MT in Greeley, Colo.
