Martinez Reaches Quarterfinals at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Boise State freshman wrestler Geordan Martinez is one of three Broncos still alive after the opening day of the Southern Scuffle, Thursday. Martinez won each of his matches at 141 pounds at McKenzie Arena, reaching the quarterfinals.

Redshirt seniors Steven Hernandez (157) and Cody Dixon (197) will open the second day of the tournament in the consolation bracket.

Martinez, the nation's 17th-ranked wrestler at 141, posted a pair of major decisions. In his opening match he knocked off Duke's Tanner Tough, 13-5, then followed with a 9-0 victory over Buffalo's Jason Estevez.

Martinez will square off against Nebraska's Anthony Abidin, ranked No. 20 nationally, in Friday's quarterfinals. He opened his collegiate career earlier this season against Abidin, falling via major decision (12-4) at the Cowboy Open.

Since the loss to Abidin, Martinez has gone 3-2 against ranked opponents.

Hernandez also won each of his first two bouts, but fell to 19th-ranked Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State in the Round of 16 (11-4). He will face Gregory Flournoy of George Mason in his first match in the consolation bracket.

Dixon posted an opening-round decision over James Benjamin (Buffalo; 13-6), but fell to fifth-ranked Connor Hartmann of Duke in the second round (3-1). He followed with a 7-5 decision (SV-1) in his opening match of the wrestleback, and will open the second day of the Scuffle against 19th-ranked Shane Woods of Wyoming.

Freshman Michael Cook dropped each of his first two matches at 133 pounds, and did not advance to the second day of the tournament.
