CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Senior Clancy Shields competed with the top players in the nation at the ITA National Indoor Championships this weekend, but his tournament run ended on Saturday with a loss in the consolation semifinals. Shields went 2-2 in the tournament, pulling off an upset in the quarterfinals.
Shields (ranked No. 34) began the weekend with a tough match against No. 20-ranked Michael Venus (LSU). The match turned out to be a three-set battle as Venus barely edged out the victory to avoid the upset by a score of 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (6). Shields dropped into the consolation bracket where he faced Fabio Silva (Fresno Pacific), who won the NAIA Small College Championship last month. It was another hard-fought three-set match, but this time Shields came out on top as he defeated Silva, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to advance into the consolation quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Shields met No. 26-ranked Austen Childs (Louisville). After the first set against the higher ranked Childs, Shields found himself in a hole as Childs made quick work, winning the set 6-0. Shields fought back to win the match in another three set battle 0-6, 7-5, 6-3. The win earned Shields a date with the No. 12-ranked Nate Schnugg (Georgia). Shields took the first set but was unable to put Schnugg away. Schnugg fought back to win the match 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 to earn a spot in the consolation finals.
The National Indoor Championships concludes the fall season for the Broncos. Their spring season will kickoff on Jan. 18 when they host Oregon at 1 p.m.
