Luke Shields Earns Place in Quarterfinals of the Indoor Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio Luke Shields advanced to the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships, hosted by Ohio State, Friday with a win over Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech 6-2 and 6-4. 


With the victory, Luke ran his record to 10-2 on the season with five victories coming against the top 100 players in the nation, according to the ITA pre-season rankings.


In the quarterfinals, L. Shields met the 21st ranked player from Notre Dame, Stephen Bass.  The match would require two tiebreakers but in the end Shields fell. After opening the match with a 6-1 victory Shields dropped the second set 6-7 and the final set by the identical score, 6-7.


This is the second time a Bronco has matched up against Bass this season. In the Wolverine Invitational, hosted by Michigan, Piotr Dijal was defeated by Bass 6-3 and 7-5.


In the consolation bracket of the indoor championships, Clancy Shields was defeated by Georgia’s Luis Flores (No. 13) 6-1 and 6-3.


The Boise State men’s tennis will have a hiatus until Jan. 20, 2007, when they host the ITA Mountain Region Team Playoff, at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho.
