Shields' Brothers Both Drop in Second Day of ITA National Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio Boise State’s Shields’ brothers took to the court Friday, in the second day of the 2007 ITA National Intercollegiate Tennis Championships. The brothers totaled a 1-2 record at the indoor tournament held at the Racquet Club of Columbus.

Junior Clancy Shields was the first of the two Broncos to play on Friday, playing in the main draw second round of 16. The NCAA No. 38 pre-season ranked Clancy Shields faced No. 19 rated Daniel Vallverdu of Miami, dropping a well fought 7-6 (4), 6-4 match. Clancy finished with a 1-1 record over his two days of the tournament.

Older brother Luke Shields played Friday afternoon in the first round of the consolation bracket. The No. 5 ranked senior took on No. 2 ranked Steve Moneke of Ohio State falling in a 6-2, 6-4 decision, leaving him with a 0-2 record in the tournament.

In 2006, Luke was able to play through to the main draw quarterfinals where he lost with a tournament record of 3-1, while Clancy went 0-2, dropping in the consolation first round. The two losses on Friday will end the Shields’ brothers run at the 2007 ITA Championships as well as their 2007 fall season.

The tournament, hosted by the Ohio State University, will run through Sunday, November 4.
