Shields Brothers Split on Day One of ITA National Tennis Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Boise State men’s tennis team was represented by a pair of brothers at the 2007 ITA National Intercollegiate Tennis Championships on Thursday, Nov. 1 in the first round of singles play. Senior Luke Shields, who is ranked No. 5 in the NCAA pre-season rankings, and his brother, Clancy Shields, a junior who is ranked No. 38 took to the court Thursday afternoon going 1-1 on the day.

In a 4 p.m. match, Luke Shields faced No. 94 rated Dalibor Pavic of Drake University in the first round of play. Shields dropped a tough match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, sending him to the consolation bracket. On Friday, Luke Shields will face the No. 2 rated Steve Moneke of Ohio State, who also fell in the first round of play on Thursday. Their match is set for 3:30 p.m. at The Racquet Club of Columbus.

In a 5:30 p.m. match on Thursday, younger brother Clancy set out to earn a win for the Broncos. The junior topped the No. 8 ranked Andre Begemann of Pepperdine in a convincing 6-2, 6-4 match. The win launches Clancy Shields into the second round of play in the main singles draw where he will take on No. 19 ranked Daniel Vallveru of Miami at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

The brother duo will begin their second day of action on Friday at the ITA National Championships hosted by the Ohio State University. The tournament runs from Nov. 1-4 at The Racquet Club of Columbus.
