LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Boise State men’s tennis player Vicente Joli continued his run of success at the Wilson/ITA Mountain Region Championships on Friday (Oct. 23), winning his quarterfinal match at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev. to earn a spot in the tournament semifinals on Saturday.
No. 12 seeded Joli needed a third set tie-breaker to emerge victorious against No. 11 Cassidy Mears (BYU) in the quarterfinals, despite a 6-2 first set win. After dropping the second set, 4-6, Joli fought back for a 7-6 (2) win in the third set to clinch the match. He is scheduled to meet George Batrakov of BYU in the semifinals tomorrow.
Filipp Pogostkin also continued his success at the regional championships with two more wins in the singles consolation bracket. Pogostkin beat Phil Anderson (New Mexico), 6-0, 7-5, before defeating Andrew Landwerlen (Denver), 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (6) to earn a spot in the consolation quarterfinals.
Pogostkin and Michael Gilliland also teamed up in the consolation bracket of the doubles tournament, where they beat Jose Liman and Nikita Ryashcenko (Utah State), 8-2. Pogostkin and Gilliland will continue doubles play in the back draw on Saturday.
