LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Boise State men’s tennis player Vicente Joli had another strong outing on Thursday (Oct. 22) at the Wilson/ITA Mountain Region Championships at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev., winning both of his singles matches to advance to the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
Joli began the day in the round of 32, where he would earn a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jens Vorkefeld (Denver). He moved on to face the tournament’s No. 4 seed in the next round, meeting Thomas Shubert of BYU for the right to advance to the round of eight. Joli, who is the No. 12 seed, played his way to the upset, beating Shubert 6-4, 6-2 to move into the quarterfinals. He is scheduled to play No. 11 Cassidy Mears (BYU) next on Friday.
Joli also teamed up with doubles partner Jeff Mullen to earn a spot in the doubles round of 16. Joli and Mullen beat Robin Pezzutto and Andrew Reiff (Northern Arizona), 8-5, to advance to the third round on Friday.
Freddy Walsh also enjoyed a successful day in singles competition for Boise State, as he was the only other Bronco who would win two matches on Thursday. After falling to the consolation bracket on day-one, Walsh rebounded with a 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 win over Austin Francis (Air Force) and a 7-5, 7-5 win over Fletcher Keyes of Montana State.
Walsh will join teammates Filipp Pogostkin and Jeff Mullen in the back draw portion of the singles tournament on Friday. Pogostkin and Mullen both lost in the round of 32 on Thursday to fall to the consolation bracket. Pogostkin lost to George Batrakov (BYU) 6-4, 6-4, while Mullen was beat by Evan Urbina (BYU) 7-6, 6-2.
