Rain Halts Day-One of Region Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Rain washed out part of day-one of the 2010 ITA Mountain Region Men's Tennis Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Wednesday (Oct. 20), but that didn't stop Boise State from opening up both singles and doubles competition before bad weather halted the action for the day.

The Broncos opened their week at the five day tournament in doubles competition as Michael Gilliland and Erik Sheldon teamed up in the round of 64. The Boise State duo battled hard but fell behind early and could not recover, dropping their opening round match against Fletcher Keyes and Pavel Turzanski of Montana State, 8-2.

Sheldon managed to rebound Wednesday afternoon as he opened singles competition in the round of 128 with a win against Brad Weaver of the University of Utah. Sheldon rolled to a 6-1 win in the first set to gain early momentum in the match. He used that success to cruise to a 6-2 second set victory, securing the 6-1, 6-2 win.

Sheldon's win would be the last of the day for Boise State, however, as Gilliland and Scott Sears both suffered opening round losses to fall to the consolation singles bracket. Gilliland dropped his first match to Kyle Lynch of UNLV, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. Sears then went on to lose to Jose Bendeck (Idaho), 7-6, 6-1.

Boise State will resume play at the ITA Mountain Region Championships on Thursday (Oct. 21) with a pair of singles matches still yet to be played. Fans can visit http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=103721 for results and updates throughout the week.
