Bronco Men Roll on First Day of Regionals

LAS VEGAS-Boise State men's tennis advanced seven singles players and three doubles pairs to second-round action at the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships, Wednesday, at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.

The Broncos' six seeded singles players were especially dominant, not allowing an opponent to win more than three games in a single set, including a combined four shutout sets. Damian Hume (No. 2 seed), James Meredith (No. 5), Andy Bettles (No. 12), Garrett Patton (No. 17-24), Scott Sears (No. 25-32), Nathan Sereke (No. 25-32) and Erik Sheldon all earned straight-set victories.

Aidan Reid fell to the consolation ladder after battling to a 6-4, 7-6 loss against BYU's Michael Eraso. Reid battled back in evening for a 6-3, 6-2 win against Stephen Katrein of Air Force to give each Bronco a win at the regional championships.

Doubles presented the Broncos with more of a challenge across the board, but three of their four pairings emerged victorious. Hume and Meredith, seeded second in the tournament, rolled to an 8-4 victory. Bettles and Sears (No. 8) put together an 8-6 win, as did Patton and Sereke (No. 16) to move onto the round of 32. Reid and Sheldon fell just short with a 9-7 loss to Oliver Good and Simon Unger of Weber State. Reid and Sheldon faced another tough challenge in their consolation match Wednesday evening, against No. 6 Ben Dunbar and James Hignett of New Mexico. The Broncos and Lobos dueled late into the match, but New Mexico's duo came out on top, 8-6.

The Broncos have one of the strongest contingents remaining at the tournament. Mountain West foe New Mexico advanced eight singles players and two doubles pairs, including the top-seeded duo in doubles action. BYU also has seven singles players and three doubles teams still alive in main draw play. In all, 18 schools were represented at the tournament.

Matches resume Thursday, with doubles at 9 a.m. (PT) and two rounds of singles beginning at 10 a.m. (PT) at the Darling Tennis Center.
