LAS VEGAS, Nev. For the third consecutive season, Shields was the top name in the men’s open singles draw at the ITA Mountain Region Championships. Following in the shoes of his older brother Luke, Bronco senior Clancy Shields earned the 2008 ITA Mountain Region singles title at the Amanda & Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center in Las Vegas.

No. 1 seeded Shields earned a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Denver University’s No. 28 seeded Martin Zimmerman. Along the way through the singles draw, Shields earned a 6-0 record to improve his season record to 7-1 in singles play. In his six matches, Shields knocked off four seeded players, including default wins over teammates No. 30 seed Cristian Hodel and No. 5 seed Kean Feeder.

Combining the 2008 win by Clancy Shields with two wins by Luke Shields (including a second place finish by Clancy in 2007 to Luke) and two finals appearances by Matias Silva, the Broncos have been represented in five straight ITA Mountain Region championship singles matches.

In doubles play, Clancy Shields joined Feeder to form the No. 2 seeded team, going 3-1, falling in the semifinals to No. 4 seeded Miles Bugby and Johnny Parkes (New Mexico), 9-8. Feeder’s singles play included a 3-1 record as well as the No. 5 seed, falling to Shields in the quarterfinals by default to end his singles play.

Steve Robertson was a No. 11 seed for the Broncos posting a 1-1 record and making it to the round of 32. Hodel earned a 2-1 record in the main draw as the No. 30 seed, falling to Clancy Shields in the round of 32 by default. Blaine Shields was the only remaining Bronco to make it past the singles main draw round of 128, going 1-1 and falling out at the round of 64 to No. 18 seed Corey Smith of Montana State in a 6-4, 7-5 loss.

Stanley Sarapanich, Stefan Simikic and Freddie Walsh lost in the round of 128 in the singles main draw, putting them straight into the consolation draw. There Sarapanich posted an outstanding 5-1 record, falling to No. 27 seeded Jakob Asplund of Utah State. In the consolation draw, Hodel posted a 4-0 record while Blaine Shields earned a 3-1 record and Steve Robertson earned a 2-1 record. Simikic and Walsh ended the tournament both with 0-2 records after falling in the first rounds of the main draw and back draw.

Robertson and Blaine Shields joined together as the No. 13 seeded doubles team, posting a 2-1 record. The pair defeated the No. 6 seed from New Mexico State in the round of 16 before falling to Feeder and Clancy Shields, 9-8 in the quarterfinals. Simikic and Walsh joined to produce a 2-1 record in the doubles main draw while Hodel and Sarapanich fell in the first round of the main draw and finished with an 0-2 doubles record after falling in their first match of the back draw.

The tournament included players from Air Force, Boise State, BYU, Denver, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana, Montana State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, UNLV, Utah, Utah State and Washington State.

Clancy Shields will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships next month. They will be hosted by the University of Virginia Nov. 6-9. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country, plus at-large selections, will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.
