Shields' Lead Broncos to Semifinals at ITA Men's Tennis Mountain Regional

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (10/19/07) The Boise State University men’s tennis team turned in an outstanding 21-6 singles record and a 7-3 doubles record in their first three days at the ITA Mountain Regional Men’s Tennis Championships. The Broncos have eight athletes in the field of 128, including two who have advanced to semifinal round set for Saturday. The championships, held at the Darling Memorial Tennis Center, will run from October 17-21.

Entering the tournament as the No. 1 seed, BSU’s Luke Shields registered a 4-0 effort over the three days. Shield, the No. 5 ranked singles player in the NCAA, first faced Bryan Miller of UNLV, winning 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday. On Thursday, Shields defeated a second Rebel, David Campbell, in a quick 6-2, 6-2 match before fighting No. 14 seed Gustave Diep of New Mexico State for a 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 win. On Friday, Shields faced fellow Bronco, Steve Robertson, winning the match due to withdrawal by Robertson. Shields will advance to face Zach Ganger of Utah at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Clancy Shields, who was entered as the No. 5 seed, has totaled a 4-0 record and holds one of four tickets to the semifinals on Saturday. Ranked No. 38 in the NCAA, Shields earned a quick 6-1, 6-4 win over Myles Perkins of Montana State in the second round. Shields also made quick work of Sascha Kiehne, a No. 25 seed, topping him 6-3, 6-4 while he advanced to the quarterfinals on a 7-5, 6-4 victory over No. 12 seed Wesley Burrows of UNLV. On Friday, Shields registered a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over No. 3 seed Elliot Wronski of UNLV, advancing to the semifinals.

Steve Robertson, who holds the No. 19 singles seed, has totaled a 4-1 record over the three days, with his lone loss being a forefeit to teammate Luke Shields. Robertson topped Greg Ferry of Air Force in the first round, 6-1, 6-0 and went on to top Bradley Bristow of Northern Arizona in a quick 6-3, 6-1 match. Late Thursday, Robertson defeated No. 8 seed Johnny Parks of New Mexico, 6-0, 6-3. Advancing to the quarterfinals, Robertson fought through a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 battle with No. 11 seed Wes Hancock of Utah.

Kean Feeder held the No. 6 seed and managed a 3-1 record in the tournament. Feeder earned two early round wins over Timmy Allin of Utah (6-3, 6-3) while also topping teammate Paul Koenke on Thrusday, 6-1, 6-3. In the quarterfinals on Friday, Feeder was stopped by No. 4 seed, Zach Ganger of Utah, falling in sets of 6-0, 7-6.

Koenke entered the tournament as a No. 26 seed and recorded a 2-1 record, dropping his only match to Feeder. He topped Idaho State’s Marc Pijoan (6-2, 4-6, 7-6) as well as Jeffrey Morys of Northern Arizona (6-2, 6-0) in the second and third rounds.

BSU’s Piotr Dilaj finished with a 2-1 record after entering as the No. 10 seed. Dilaj earned his first win over Oscar Ericsson of Utah State on Wednesday, 6-3, 6-2. His second victory came over Evan Urbina of Brigham Young on Thursday, 6-2, 7-5. Dilaj dropped out of the open singles bracket when he fell to Max Jones of New Mexico, 6-1, 6-4, Thrusday afternoon.

Stanley Sarapanich finished 1-1 in the tournament topping Ryan Fraser of NAU (6-1, 6-2) before dropping to No. 2 seed Adam Holmstrom of Denver (6-1, 6-2). No. 21 seed Eric Roberson also finished with a 1-1 record in singles action, topping WSU’s Chris Williams (6-1, 6-0). Roberson fell to Stefan McKinney of New Mexico State (6-3, 6-4) in the round of 32.

In doubles action, BSU’s Luke Shields and Clancy Shields entered as the No. 2 seed. The Shields brothers, who are ranked No. 30 in the nation were able to earn one win (8-1) over New Mexico State’s Eduardo Salas and Roman Stoisavijevic. In the round of 16, the BSU duo were knocked off by the No. 10 seed of Zach Ganger and John Taylor of Utah, 8-3.

BSU’s team of Paul Koenke and Eric Roberson have advanced to the doubles semifinals after a 3-0 record. The team earned wins of 8-6 over Jakub Dybala and Kyle McDonald of MSU and then went on to defeat fellow Broncos, Dilaj and Sarapanich, 9-7. Koenke and Roberson topped Burrows and Wronski of UNLV, 9-8, to advance to the semifinal round.

No. 6 seed, Feeder and Robertson earned an 8-5 win over Jacobs and Maharaj of Utah leading to an 8-3 win over Rodgers and Soster of Air Force. The duo was knocked out of contention by New Mexico’s Jones and Pajkowski in an 8-3 match.

The final doubles team to compete at the regional was Dilaj and Sarapanich, who tallied a 1-1 doubles record. The pair earned an 8-5 win over Althaus and Gunaseelan of Denver before falling to teammates Koenke and Roberson.

The singles semifinals are set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, while the final round will be at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Doubles action will continue with the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. while the finals will be at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. The winners of both the singles and doubles brackets will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University Nov. 1-4.
