Two Broncos Advance to Quarterfinals of Mountain Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. Clancy Shields and Eric Roberson, of the Boise State University men’s tennis team each qualified for the quarterfinals of the ITA Mountain Regional in Las Vegas, Nev., which will be held Oct. 20.


In the Round of 32, Shields, who is seeded seventh in the tournament, earned victory over Northern Arizona’s Gareth Ducray by the score of 6-2 and 6-2.  In the following round he defeated Luca Barlocchi in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2, to advance.


Roberson faced off against Sascha Kiehne of Weber State in the Round of 32 and prevailed in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3. In the round of 16, Roberson was set to match up against Boise State teammate and the tournament’s number one seed, Luke Shields.  Through a twist of fate Roberson was given passage to the semi-finals when L. Shields was forced to retire due to medical reasons. 


As a team, the Broncos advanced all seven members competing in the Round of 32 to the Round of 16.


Luke Shields won his opening match of the day over Cale Planck of BYU, 7-5 and 6-3, before being forced to retire. 


Brent Werbeck knocked off his second seeded opponent in as many tries to advance to the Round of 16.  After defeating the 16th seeded Kamil Pajkowski of New Mexico in straight sets Wednesday, Werbeck beat San Jose State’s Kyle McDonald (No. 20), 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2. In the Round of 16 he could not overcome Chip Hand and fell, 6-1 and 6-1.


Freshman Blake Boswell continues to impress as he defeated Stuart Wing of Utah State, 6-1 and 6-2.  Boswell then squared off against the 2nd seed in the tournament Andam Holstrom and fell, 6-1 and 6-1.


In the Round of 32, Piotr Dilaj overcame Elliot Wronski (No. 11) of UNLV, 6-1 and 7-5 to advance. While taking on Zach Granger in the Round of 16, Dilaj was forced to retire because of health related issues.


Steve Robertson, who collected two victories on Wednesday, earned another in the Round of 32 when he vanquished number 14 seed Graeme Kassautzki of UNLV, 5-7, 6-2 and 6-4. In the following round Robertson was defeated by the 4th seed Max Jones, 7-5 and 6-1.


The Broncos also earned three victories in the doubles competition to advance to the Round of 16. All-Western Athletic Conference doubles team of Robertson and C. Shields captured the first victory of the day defeating Dhatt and Rosen from Denver, 8-5. Dilaj and L. Shields also earned victory at the expense of BYU’s Hand and Sanchez, 8-2.  The final victory of the day for the Broncos came from Boswell and Roberson who beat Ducray and Freitas of Northern Arizona, 8-2.



Werbeck and Jamaal Hepburn did not advance in the doubles competition. They were defeated 8-5, at the hands of Beg and Gorostiaga of New Mexico State.


The ITA Mountain Region Championships will continue Friday, Oct. 20, when C. Shields and Roberson compete in singles and the three doubles teams go.
