Broncos Have Mountain Regional Championship in Their Sights

What’s Happening The Boise State University men’s tennis team will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, to compete in the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, Oct. 18-22.


The Field The tournament field will feature teams from all over the mountain region and will include Western Athletic Conference rivals New Mexico State and Utah State. In addition to Boise State, 12 teams had players seeded in the tournament; Denver, New Mexico, BYU, Utah, UNLV, New Mexico State, Weber State, Montana, Montana State, Utah State, Air Force and Northern Arizona.


The Players The Broncos will send eight players to the Mountain Regional Championships including the tournament’s number one seeded player, Luke Shields.


Shields enters the competition as the nation’s 33rd ranked player, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. At the All-American Championships, Shields knocked off three straight ranked opponents to advance to the quarterfinals before eventually falling to the nation’s number four ranked player. 


In addition to Luke Shields, Boise State has two others seeded in the top 10 at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships. 


Brother Clancy Shields joins Luke in the top 10 with his seventh place seed and Blake Boswell who ranked 10th in the final seeding.  


Other Broncos receiving seeds include Eric Roberson at 13 and Piotr Dilaj at 31. 


Also participating in the regional championships are Brent Werbeck, Steve Robertson and Jamaal Hepburn.


All eight members of the team will be participating in the doubles competition as well with three duos receiving seeds. Dilaj and L. Shields received the Broncos’ highest seed at number five, followed by C. Shields and Robertson at six.  The final seed went to the team of Boswell and Roberson at number eight. Hepburn and Werbeck will make up the final doubles team.
