BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State men's tennis team went three separate ways this weekend to compete in three different tournaments. Three Broncos competed in the Utah State Fall Invitational in Logan, Utah, while two more went to the Racquet Club Invitational in Midland, Texas, and two more traveled to the Lobo Balloon Fiesta Classic on the campus of the University of New Mexico.

A pair of freshmen represented the Broncos at the Lobo Balloon Fiesta Classic as Freddy Walsh and Stanley Sarapanich each advanced into the quarterfinals in singles and won the consolation bracket of doubles. Sarapanich drew a first round bye in the singles tournament and then faced Adam Perez (Northern Colorado) in the round of 16. Sarapanich quickly swept his opponent 6-0, 6-4 to advance into the quarterfinals. He next faced Cody Hall (Air Force) in a hard-fought fought match but lost 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. Walsh took a similar route, receiving a first round bye. He faced Jaco Visagie in the round of 16 in a very tight match but emerged as the winner with 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory to advance. In the quarterfinals, Sarapanich ran into Phil Anderson (New Mexico) and lost the match in straight sets. As a team, Sarapanich and Walsh lost their first match but then dominated the doubles consolation bracket. The pair easily won the quarterfinals of the bracket to face a team from Air Force. They advanced into the finals, where they faced and defeated another Air Force duo by a score of 8-2 to take the consolation bracket.

A trio of young Broncos competed in the Utah State Fall Classic with very similar results as their teammates. Freshman Michael Gilliland and sophomore Joey Coleman each won their first-rond matchups. Gilliland then played a down-to-the-wire match but came out on the wrong end as he was defeated 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. Coleman met former Bronco Eric Roberson in his second round match and lost the match 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Erik Sheldon lost his first-round match, but advanced far into the consolation bracket by winning his first two consolation matches before falling in the quarterfinals. Gilliland and Coleman competed in the doubles matches where they went 1-1 after losing in the quarterfinals.

Senior Blane Shields and freshman Nick Gourley competed in the Midland Invitational for the Broncos. Both lost their first round matchups and were dropped into the consolation bracket. Shields picked up a win in his first consolation match, but lost the second round match 6-3, 6-2 to Darren Walsh (SMU). The pair competed in doubles as well and won their first-round match over Marcus Lunt and Austin Klores (Texas A&M) 9-8 (1). They couldn't translate their success into the second round as they dropped the match 8-3 to a pair from SMU.

The ITA Mountain Region Championships start Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nev., with eight Broncos competing in the tournament.
