Shields Advances to Round of 16

MIDLAND, Texas The Boise State University men’s tennis team registered a 4-3 record in singles play, Friday at the Midland Collegiate Invitational.

 

The Bronco’s Clancy Shields advanced past two opponents to reach the round of 16. The opening round needed two tiebreakers but Shields persevered and took the match against Brandon Davis of Illinois. In the following round he defeated Federico Murgier of SMU in straight sets 6-2 and 6-1.

 

In the round of 16, Shields faced the nation’s 27th ranked, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech but fell in three sets 4-6, 6-2 and 6-3.

 

In other singles play, Brent Werbeck earned a victory in the opening round over Michigan’s Peter Aarts, 6-3, 3-5 and 7-5 to advance but in the round of 32 Werbeck’s run came to an end when he faced Denes Lukacs of Baylor and fell 6-3 and 6-3.

 

Steve Robertson was defeated in the opening round of the tournament by David Kuczer of SMU, 6-3 and 6-2.  He then went into the consolation bracket and beat Alberto Ajis of Texas-Arlington, 6-3 and 6-2. Robertson will continue play Saturaday Oct. 14.

 

Robertson and Shields lost in the opening round of doubles play to Kutrovsky and Zabala of Texas 8-5.
