Broncos on Their Way to the Lone Star State

What’s Happening Three members of the Boise State University men’s tennis team will traveling to Midland, Texas, Oct. 13-15, to compete in the Midland Collegiate Invitational.


The Field The tournament will feature teams from a variety of conferences including the Western Athletic Conference, the Pacific-10, the Big 12, Conference-USA and the Big 10.  The tournament will also feature nine nationally ranked players, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.  The highest ranked will be number 23 Michal Kokta of Baylor University who received the number 1 seed in the tournament.


The Players Clancy Shields, Steve Robertson and Brent Werbeck will be the three Broncos traveling to Texas.  Each member of the team will compete in the singles competition but Shields and Robertson will also be taking part in doubles.


Last season Shields and Robertson won 84 percent of their doubles matches to post a record of 21-4 for the season. Both earned first-team All-WAC honors for their play as a doubles team.  This season the duo is 1-0, after they earned a victory at the Baylor Invitational.


In the opening round of the singles competition, Shields will be matched up against Illinois’ Brandon Davis, while Werbeck will take on Peter Aarts of Michigan and Robertson will go to battle against SMU’s David Kuczer.

The Broncos return eight members from their 2005-06 team that captured the WAC Championship in Boise, Idaho.
