Shields earned an automatic bid into the main draw with his high national ranking, but drew a tough first-round matchup against the higher-ranked Bauman. He beat Bauman in straight sets with 6-4, 6-3 victory to advance into the round of 32, where he met another highly-ranked opponent. Shields squared off against no. 14 Bruno Rosa (Rice) and was defeated in his second round match 6-4, 6-4.
