Broncos Head Off to Battle in the Bay Classic

  • What’s Happening: Boise State has three members, Garrett Patton, Thomas Tenreiro and Brendan McClain,  of its men’s tennis team participating in the Bay in the Bay Classic at San Francisco this weekend.
  • Locations: All matches will be played at the California Tennis Club Call (415-346-3611) located at 1770 Scott Street, San Francisco, CA. 
  • Dates: The competition runs Friday through Sunday, Oct. 10-12.
  • Format: The tournament structure is your typical flighted format featuring one 64-man draw in singles and one 32-team draw in doubles.
  • The Field: There will be representatives from 13 schools including Boise State at this year’s Battle in the Bay Classic. Joining the Broncos this weekend are California, Cal Poly, Duke, Pacific, Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s, San Diego, San Francisco, Southern California, Stanford, UC Davis and UCLA. 
  • Boise State is being represented by three members of the team in senior Garrett Patton, junior Thomas Tenreiro and sophomore Brendan McClain. All three will compete in singles with Patton and McClain also teaming up for the doubles competition. 
  • The three Broncos are no strangers to this competition as they all participated in the 2013 edition of the Battle in the Bay
  • Thomas Tenreiro is seeded sixth in the singles field and will open the tournament by facing Thomas Hunt from Saint Mary’s at 3 p.m. (Mountain) Friday afternoon. Last year, Tenreiro reached the semifinals at the BBC before falling to No. 1 seeded and 41st-ranked Campbell Johnson from California.  
  • Garrett Patton will begin his tournament run at 12 p.m. (Mountain) Friday against Pepperdine’s Tom Hill.
  • Brendan McClain opens his singles tournament against Southern Cal’s Connor Farren at 1:30 p.m. (Mountain) Friday afternoon.
  • In doubles, Patton and McClain begin their competition as the tournament’s third seed. The tandem will open in the round 16 against Tom Hill and Stefan Menichella of Pepperdine at 10 a.m. Friday morning. Patton and McClain advanced to the semifinals of the Battle in the Bay Classic last fall. 
  • The Broncos have won all three MW Tournament Championships since joining the league for 2011-12.
  • Boise State men’s tennis has won 15 conference tournament championships.
  • Boise State has won 12 conference titles and qualified for the NCAA tournament 15 times in Greg Patton’s 18 seasons as head coach.
  • The only years that they did not qualify for NCAA Tournament under Patton were: 1993, 2004, 2011.
