Boise State 4-1 in Singles on Day-One of Fall Classic

BOISE, Idaho - Rain delayed the start of the 2010 Boise State Fall Men's Tennis Classic, Friday (Oct. 8) morning, but wet courts couldn't halt the action forever as players from 15 different schools battled throughout the day at the Appleton Tennis Center and Julia Davis Park.

Boise State enjoyed success in singles competition on Friday as the Broncos rolled to a 4-1 record in collegiate competition, and a 1-0 record in the open bracket. Boise State was led in the Blue Draw by junior Freddy Walsh, who advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins to open the weekend. He first beat Matt Cowley (Utah), 6-4, 7-6, before taking down Sven Poslusny (Utah State), 6-4, 6-1, in the round of 32.

Walsh will be joined in the Blue round of 16 by sophomore Filipp Pogostkin, who opened his day with a first round bye. Pogostkin would earn his first win of the weekend by beating Anders Tischer (Lewis-Clark State), 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the final 16.

The Broncos also placed one player in the round of 16 of the Orange Draw as junior Erik Sheldon finished 1-0 on the day in singles as well. After opening the tournament with a bye Sheldon beat Oliver Sindayigaya (LCSC), 6-4, 7-5, to reserve his spot in the third round.

Boise State sophomore Jeff Mullen recorded the final Bronco win of the day, although he is competing in the open draw which does not count toward his official season record. Mullen scored his win in the round of 32 over Oliver Good, 7-6, 6-4, to advance into the second round of open competition.

Saturday's action is scheduled to kick-off at 9 a.m. with singles and doubles matches running throughout the entire day once again at Appleton and Julia Davis. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
