BOISE, Idaho-- Boise State men's tennis went 4-0 in singles action, Friday, on the first day of the Boise State Fall Classic. Andrew Bettles and Garrett Patton advanced to the quarterfinals of the Blue Draw. Erik Sheldon will play in the quarterfinals of the Orange Draw.
Quarterfinal and semifinal matches are scheduled for Saturday, with finals on Sunday. Matches resume at 9 a.m. Saturday, at the Appleton Tennis Center and the Boas Indoor Tennis Center.
Bettles, a sophomore, is the No. 1 seed in the Blue Flight. He won 6-3, 6-1 against Idaho's Alan Shin in Bettles' only match of the day after taking a bye through the first round. Bettles is ranked 124th in the ITA preseason singles rankings. He will take on Oliver Jamin from Gonzaga in the quarterfinals.
Patton, seeded sixth, won his first-round match in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) against Dakota Pate of Idaho State. The Bronco freshman rebounded from a first-set loss in his second match for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against Jose Bendeck from Idaho.
Bettles and Patton will also team up Saturday, in a quarterfinal match in the Blue Flight Doubles draw.
Sheldon, seeded second in the Orange Flight, earned a bye into the second round. There, the senior he rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Montana's Ethan Vaughn.
All three Broncos will take the court Saturday morning, at 10:30, at the Appleton Tennis Center.
Five more Boise State student-athletes are participating in the open tournament at the Boise State Fall Classic.
Hume Completes Trip To All-American Championships
Boise State senior Damian Hume scored an upset win in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships, before bowing out in Tulsa, Okla.
Hume won his first round match against No. 19 Finn Tearnay (Pepperdine) 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Hume fell to No. 5 Chase Buchanan (Ohio State) 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 32.
The senior earned his place in the main draw after winning three matches in the qualifying draw, Monday through Wednesday.
