TULSA, Okla.-Boise State men's tennis got off to a perfect start Monday, at the ITA All-American Championships. Senior Damian Hume and redshirt junior James Meredith each won their first-round matches in the qualifying draw of the tournament.
Hume, tabbed No. 63 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, defeated Will Vasos of Iowa, 6-4, 6-4. Meredith, ranked 109th, upset No. 61 Ille Van-Engelen of Ohio State, 7-6 (6), 6-3.
Both Broncos have second-round matches at 10 a.m. (CT), Tuesday. The second round is the round of 64.
The qualifying draw will be played out to the final 16. Those 16 will join 48 student-athletes already selected for the main draw. Meredith competed in the main draw at the 2010 championships, falling in the round of 32.
The Boise State duo will also team up in doubles action Tuesday, after earning a bye through the first round. Hume and Meredith are ranked No. 51 in doubles and take on the team of Raleigh Smith and Spencer Wolf from Northwestern.
