TULSA, Oklahoma (10/4/07) - Boise State’s Clancy Shields is the lone Bronco remaining at the Polo Ralph Lauren All American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla. after splitting his two matches Thursday. Clancy lost his first match then rebounded with a win in the first round of the consolation bracket. His older brother Luke Shields did not fare as well dropping a pair of three-set matches resulting in his elimination from the tournament.
Clancy Shields started the day early with a first round defeat in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to the nation’s 10th ranked singles player Ohio State’s Greg Ouellette. After a break, the junior from Grand Junction, Colo. rallied in the back draw to upset Notre Dame’s Sheeva Parbhu, ranked 30th, in two sets 6-3, 6-3. The victory keeps Clancy alive in the tournament as he advances to the second round of the consolation bracket. He will now face Ohio State’s Justin Kronauge at 10:30 a.m. (Central), the Buckeye is ranked 104th nationally.
Luke Shields had to battle both his competition and illness during the first day of the All American and fell victim to both. Luke met Rice University’s Ralph Knupfer, ranked 81st nationally, in the round of 64 where he lost the match in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. The first round defeat sent Shields into the consolation bracket where he played Pepperdine’s Bassam Beidas, ranked 31st in the NCAA. As in the first match, Luke lost in three sets this time winning the first then dropping the final two sets, 2-6, 7-6 (9), 6-3. Luke was up in the second set tiebreaker but could not hold on for the victory. The senior was eliminated from the tournament with his second defeat of the day.
