BOISE, Idaho – On Thursday, Oct. 1, Boise State men’s tennis player James Meredith was named the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Player of the Month for September after compiling a 3-1 singles record and a 2-1 doubles record to open the fall season. This marks the second time in his career that Meredith has received the award.
Meredith, a sophomore from Christ Church, New Zealand, finished fifth at the Virginia “One-Plus-One” tournament in Charlottesville, Va. last weekend, where he earned a pair of victories against nationally ranked opponents. Meredith upset No. 16 Clay Donato of North Carolina (4-6, 6-2, 10-7) in consolation play, before also taking down No. 72 ranked Simon Childs of Louisville (6-2, 6-2). Meredith is currently ranked No. 53 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Meredith also compiled a 2-1 doubles record at the tournament with partner Vicente Joli. Meredith and Joli, who are ranked No. 41 in doubles, lost their only match of the tournament to No. 17 Michael Shabaz and Jarmere Jenkins of Virginia, 8-6, in the championship match of their bracket.
Meredith will look to continue his success next week at the ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. Meredith is one of 48 players to have earned an at-large selection into the main draw of the singles tournament. Meredith and Joli will also compete in the doubles main draw.
