TULSA, Okla. - Boise State’s Thomas Tenreiro was the lone Bronco remaining in singles at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on Monday.  The junior from Miami, Fla., opened his tournament experience on Monday battling through two tough matches before falling in three sets each time.
“I am so proud of Thomas (Tenreiro) and how hard he fought all day against two tough competitors,” said head coach Greg Patton. “He fell behind early in the first match against Lai losing the first set, he then took the second set to force it into a third. He is such a fighter, he went down 5-2 in the third set, battled back to tie it at 5-5 before it got away. In the second match he played well again, but it just did not go his way. The way he played today was outstanding and in my eyes he won both matches.”
Tenreiro opened the day at 8 a.m. (Mountain) when he took on Kentucky’s Kevin Lai in the first round of the qualifying tournament. It was a back and forth match throughout with Tenreiro falling 7-5 in the opening set. He then came back to win the second in a tie-break 7-6, forcing a decisive third. In the final frame he fell behind early 5-2 to the Wildcat. However, he regrouped once again and tied the set at five all, only to see Lai rally for the win 7-5, 6-7, 7-5.
Following the loss, Tenreiro was placed into the consolation draw where he faced Jordan Daigle from LSU. This time Tenreiro took set one, winning by a 6-4 score. Unfortunately, the final two sets went to Daigle in another back and forth affair. In the end Tenreiro had loss his second match of the day in three sets, this time by scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Monday was the first action of the tournament for Tenreiro who did not have to compete in the first “pre-qualifying” tournament like teammates Brendan McClain, Garrett Patton and Toby Mitchell.  Tenreiro was the highest seeded Bronco in Tulsa and was placed directly into the second stage of the tournament which began this morning.
The Broncos still have two doubles teams left competing at the ITA All-American in senior Garrett Patton and sophomore Brendan McClain, Boise State’s top doubles team, who will open their competition against TCU’s Trey Daniels and Trevor Johnson Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. (Mountain). The second team which was added late Monday night by the selection committee has the junior tandem of Tenreiro and Toby Mitchell taking on South Florida’s Oliver Pramming and Justin Roberts in a match scheduled to start at 1 p.m. (Mountain).
