TULSA, Okla. - Boise State’s men’s tennis team took on some of the top tennis players in the nation in Tulsa, Okla., on Sunday, but in the end Garrett Patton, Brendan McClain and Toby Mitchell all lost. As a result of the defeats all three came up short of advancing to the next stage of the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships.
The lone Bronco remaining in the singles competition is junior Thomas Tenreiro who will begin his tournament in the second stage of the event, the “qualifying round”. In addition, Garrett Patton and McClain will compete in Tuesday’s doubles qualifying tournament.
“I felt immensely satisfied with our results and play for the first tournament of the fall season. We won seven of our matches and were toe-to-toe with our opponents in the three that we lost,” said head coach Greg Patton. “The performances of Toby Mitchell, Garrett Patton and Brendan McClain gives me an undying faith that this team is talented enough to not only shake the ladder of top teams in the nation, but also climb it. Best part is that we still have Thomas Tenreiro in the singles and the Boise State doubles team of Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton in the doubles.”
Mitchell opened Sunday with a victory over Tulsa’s Matt Kirby with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. However, the junior fell in the second match 7-6 (5), 6-2 to Thomas Weigel from North Carolina State.
Like Mitchell, McClain also opened the day with a win recording a three-set victory over Wichita State’s Miroslav Herzan 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. After battling back from a first set loss to win set two, the sophomore fell in a tough three-set loss to Wake Forest’s Jonathon Ho 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Senior Garrett Patton also competed today falling in his first match on Sunday to Skander Mansouri from Wake Forest 6-3, 7-6 (6). All three Broncos were eliminated from the tournament with their losses.
