MIDLAND, Texas - The Boise State men's tennis team concluded a strong weekend in singles action at the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas, with two Broncos reaching the round of 16 on Saturday (Sept. 19) before falling from competition.
Filipp Pogostkin started his weekend off strong, winning his first two matches on Friday to advance to the round of 16. Pogostkin earned his first win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, against Jeff Bryan of Texas Tech. In the second round, he would next defeat New Mexico's Ben Dunbar, 7-5, 7-6, moving on to the third round. Pogostkin's tournament would come to an end shortly there after, however, as he would fall to Maros Horny of Baylor, 6-0, 6-2, Saturday morning.
Teammate Cristian Hodel also made his way through to the round of 16, after a first round bye on Friday. In the second round, Hodel earned a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 win against Joe Wood of New Mexico to advance on to the second day of competition. His tournament run would also come to an end in the third round, though, falling to Daniel Whitehead of Texas, 6-4, 6-3.
Pogostkin and Hodel also teamed up in doubles competition on Friday, although they failed to advance through their first match of the tournament. The duo lost to Chris Camilone and Jon Wiegand of Texas, 8-4, to wrap up the weekend.
The Bronco men will now turn their attention to next weekend (Sept. 25-27), when they will travel to Charlottesville, V.A. to compete in the University of Virginia "One Plus One" Tournament.
