MIDLAND, Texas - Andy Bettles leads Boise State men’s tennis at the Midland Intercollegiate in Midland, Texas, in the Broncos first competition of the fall season. The senior from Somerset, England, has advanced to the semifinals in both singles and doubles, his partner is freshman Brendan McClain. After two days the Broncos are 7-3 in singles matches and 4-1 in doubles.
Boise State advanced three of its four singles participants into the round of 16 with Bettles reaching the semifinal on Sunday. The senior, ranked 21 nationally, open the competition with a win in the round of 32 over Leif Berger of Rice in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. He then added a pair of victories Saturday defeating Texas-Arlington’s (UTA) Carlos Arbiza 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16, followed by his third straight-set victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Texas’ Nick Naumann in the quarterfinals.
Joining Bettles in the round of 16 where Brian Foley who defeated Rodolfo Juaregui from New Mexico, 7-6 (6), 6-1 on Friday in the round of 32. He then fell in the round of 16 on Saturday to Felipe Soares of Texas Tech 6-4, 6-3.
True freshman Brendan McClain had a solid debut performance for the Broncos reaching the round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ilija Cuie of Wichita State. On Saturday he lost to New Mexico’s Hayden Sanatka in a hard fought three-set battle 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Garrett Patton is the fourth Bronco to travel to Texas. He remains alive in the consolation bracket after falling in the round of 32. The junior from Boise opened Friday with a straight-set 6-3, 6-3 win over Tomislav Gregurovic of Wichita State in the round of 64. Then later that day he fell to Oklahoma State’s Sebastian Sachs in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Today Patton regrouped to win a consolation match over TCU’s Will Stein in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles the Broncos paired Bettles and McClain up for one pair, while Patton and Foley teamed up for the second pair. Bettles and McClain won their opener on Friday 8-5 over Tulsa’s duo of Matthew Kirby and Chase Gordon in the round of 16. The two then defeated TCU’s Will Stein and Rodolfo Bustamante 8-7 (6) in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Patton and Foley lost their opening doubles match 8-6 to a pair from Texas, Clement Homs and Adrien Berkowicz. Today they saw victory in a pair of consolation matches over UTA’s Marek Pesiscka and Carlos Arbiza (8-1) and TCU’s Trey Daniel and Blake Wiggins (8-1).
