PROVO, Utah - Boise State's Michael Gilliland unofficially started his 2010-11 tennis season with a strong showing at the Utah Fall Classic hosted by Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah this past weekend (Sept. 9-11), where he would play to the semifinal round in singles competition.
The Utah Fall Classic, which is not an ITA sanctioned event and does not count on Gilliland's official record, featured some of the top players from the region. Gilliland solidified himself as a contended early, winning three singles matches in three sets to advance to the final four.
Gilliland opened his weekend with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win over Garrett Labarre in the round of 32. Next, he knocked off Keaton Cullimore, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. In the round of eight Gilliland would beat Gino Octa, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. His run ended there, however, as a 6-2, 6-1 loss to No. 1 seed Thomas Shubert of BYU would bring his weekend to a close.
