Broncos Complete Opening Weekend at D.C. Invite

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State men's tennis team officially opened its fall schedule this past weekend (Sept. 5-6) as the Broncos traveled to Maryland to square off against Virginia Tech in the D.C. Invitational.

The two programs met in an individual head-to-head tournament which featured two singles flights and one doubles flight on both Sunday and Monday. Sunday's matches were played at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, M.D., while Monday's matches took place at the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, M.D. Boise State struggled to secure many wins on the weekend but did have a strong showing in several matches against the Hokies.

On Sunday, Virginia Tech swept the four singles matches despite being stretched to three sets in two of them. Will Beck (VT) defeated Boise State's Scott Sears, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10) in the most exciting singles match of the day. The Broncos did manage to scratch out a win in doubles action as Erik Sheldon and Freddy Walsh beat Beck and Corrado Degl' Incerti Tocci, 8-6.

Monday wasn't much better for Boise State as the Hokies would sweep the Broncos in all four singles matches and both doubles matches. Once again Boise State didn't go out down without a fight, as the Broncos played two singles matches to a decisive tie-breaker third set. Jeff Mullen dropped a close singles match to Beck, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (8), while Sears also lost to Tocci, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 1-0 (9).

The Broncos are beginning their individual schedule which will run into November. Boise State will then turn to its team schedule in late January.
