Patton Adds Brian Tran to Roster

BOISE, Idaho - Greg Patton, Boise State’s head men’s tennis coach, announced today the addition of Brian Tran (Greystanes, Australia) to the 2016 fall roster. Tran comes to Boise State as a true freshman who has solid international experience playing in junior tournaments throughout the world. He has enrolled at Boise State and is eligible to play during the fall season. The Australian brings the roster up to a total of 10 players and he is the fifth newcomer to the squad for this year.

“We brought the thunder from down under with Brian Tran to add some hot sauce to our rich recruiting class for 2016-17,” said Patton.  “Brian brings exceptional international experience to the Broncos, for he has tasted competition at the highest international level in the world which includes participation in junior slams.  When I think about coaching Brian in the Boise State blue and orange, I can only imagine what Batman feels like when he gets behind the steering wheel of the Batmobile.”

Tran has been one of the top rated juniors in Australia for most his career and was No. 1 at U14. He has been ranked as high as No. 72 in the Australian men’s open division in the 2015-16 season. His highest International Tennis Federation junior ranking in 2016 was No. 113.

The Australian, has advanced to several junior tournament quarterfinals or better in singles during his career.  Highlights were winning the 2015 Queensland Junior Winter International. Tran also advanced to the final of 2015 Tecnifibre Tennis Central Championship in Wellington, New Zealand; the semifinals of the 2014 Chang Thailand ITF Juniors G2 at Nonthaburi, Thailand; and the 2014 Oceania Closed Junior Championships semifinals at Lautoka, Fiji. He has also competed at the 2014 and 2015 Australian Open Juniors Championship.

In doubles, Tran and his partners won the 2014 Chang Thailand ITF Juniors G4 title at Nonthaburi, Thailand, and the 2014 Oceania Closed Junior Championships at Fiji. Tran lost in the doubles championship match at the 2015 China Junior 16 Beijing Tournament. He also reached the doubles semifinals at the 2015 Queensland Junior Winter International and the 2015 Tecnifibre Tennis Central Championship.
