Boise State Downs Hawaii 4-0 in WAC Tournament First Round
Broncos to play Fresno State in semifinals.

BOISE, Idaho (4/29/2011) - Boise State University’s men’s tennis team advanced to the Western Athletic Conference semifinals with a 4-0 victory over the University of Hawai’i Friday evening at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center in Boise. Boise State won the doubles point 2-0, then followed by winning the first three singles matches for the victory. The Broncos will ride the momentum of the 4-0 sweep into Saturday’s semifinals against top-seeded Fresno State. The match is tentatively scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start at the Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center, weather permitting.

Boise State opened the first round match with a sweep of the number two and three doubles to claim the key doubles point. Jeff Mullen and Nathan Sereke opened the doubles scoring by defeating Leo Rosenberg and Jereny Tweedt 8-3. Andrew Bettles and Flipp Pogostkin gave the Broncos the doubles point shortly after when they won the number three doubles over Hawai’i’s Danilo Casanova and Saniel Llarenas 8-2. Boise State’s Damian Hume and Scott Sears were leading 6-4 at the number one doubles when the match was abandoned.

The two teams opened singles by playing the number 1-4 first before starting the five and six singles do to the large crowd. The Broncos stormed out taking the first set in all four singles matches. Andrew Bettles gave Boise State a 2-0 match advantage when he defeated the Warriors’ Leo Rosenberg in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 at the number two singles.

Flipp Pogostkin increased the Bronco lead to 3-0 defeating Jonathan Brooklyn 6-4, 6-0 at the number four position. The decisive point came at the number three singles when Scott Sears became the third Bronco to win in straight sets by scores of 6-3, 7-5.
