LAS CRUCES, N.M. The No. 32-ranked Boise State men’s tennis team had a tough first day of competition at the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Championships. The No. 1-seeded Broncos who were defending a three-year title run fell, 4-3, to No. 4-seeded Hawai’i in Saturday’s semifinal round. The Broncos looked as if they were going to advance on to Sunday’s final match when going up 3-0, however the No. 92-ranked Rainbow Warriors came back to win four-straight matches to clinch the team win.

The Broncos came strong out of the gates in doubles play, clinching the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles match, No. 32-ranked Luke Shields and Clancy Shields upended Sascha Heinemann and Andreas Weber, 8-3. Broncos Eric Roberson and Paul Koenke recorded the same score in their No. 2 doubles win over Jeff Fitch and Dennis Lajola. The No. 3 doubles match went unfinished with Boise State’s Piotr Dilaj and Steve Robertson tied with Craig Faulk and Spence Mendoza at 5-5 when doubles play was ceased.

In singles play, Boise State locked in two quick wins with Dilaj making a quick break to defeat Faulk 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 match. No. 94-ranked Luke Shields picked up the second singles win of the day, defeating Lajola 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the No. 1 match.

From there the Rainbow Warriors took control, picking up four singles wins. Hawai’i’s Weber downed Brent Werbeck, 7-6, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot while Mendoza picked up a 7-6, 6-3 win over Paul Koenke in the No. 5 match. No. 108-ranked Heinemann fought off No. 77-ranked Clancy Shields to win the No. 2 singles match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The Warriors’ Fitch helped to clinch the title when he defeated Roberson 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 6 singles match.

With the loss the Broncos’ 11-match winning streak comes to a halt and they now hold a 21-11 record while the Warriors improve to a 7-10 record. Boise State will await Tuesday’s NCAA First Round selections to discover where they will advance in post-season play.
