Broncos Cruise Past No. 46 Fresno State in Home Finale

BOISE, Idaho The Boise State men’s tennis team couldn’t have ended their 2009 regular season on a sweeter note, going 3-0 over the weekend against Western Athletic Conference opponents and concluding with a 5-2 win over No. 46-ranked Fresno State on Saturday evening. The No. 19-ranked Broncos move to 21-7 on the season and expand to a 10-match winning streak with the win.

 

The Broncos began by winning the ever-crucial doubles point against Fresno State, battling to the final games to clinch the first team point. Fresno State looked to have the upper hand with No. 37-ranked Rudolf Siwy and Mirko Zapletal earning the first win of the day, defeating No. 39-ranked Kean Feeder and James Meredith, 8-4, in the No. 1 match. The Broncos answered back with an 8-5 win by Blane Shields and Matt Solomon over Taylor Leby and Tejesvi Veerepalli in the No. 3 match to tie-up the doubles matches. With the deciding match on the line, seniors Clancy Shields and Stanley Sarapanich were able to come out on top with a 9-7 win over Remi Boutillier and Rikus de Villiers in the No. 2 match to clinch the doubles point for the Broncos in front of an energetic Boise State crowd.

 

Senior Kean Feeder showed why he is ranked No. 74 in the nation in singles play, earning a quick 6-3, 6-3 win in the No. 1 singles match over Zapletac to put the Broncos up 2-0.

 

The Bulldog’s Flavio Mollinedo narrowed the team score to 2-1 after defeating Blane Shields 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 6 match.

 

From there the Broncos were able to capture two straight wins to clinch the team title 5-2. No. 26-ranked Clancy Shields battled to a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 59-ranked Siwy in the No. 2 spot while Cristian Hodel earned a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (2) win over Boutillier in the No. 4 match to clinch the team win.

 

Fresno State’s Veerepalli was able to hold off Sarapanich in the No. 5 match, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to earn the Bulldogs’ second and final point of the night.

 

Boise State was able to close out the match with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win by No. 82-ranked Meredith defeating de Villiers in the No. 3 match.

 

The Broncos complete their 2009 regular season with the win and finish with a 14-5 home court record.

 

Seniors Clancy Shields, Blane Shields, Sarapanich and Feeder played their final matches at the Appleton Tennis Center.

 

Continuing to post-season, the Broncos will head to Honolulu, Hawaii to participate in the WAC Conference tournament April 24-26.
