Broncos Muscle Past Utah State, Hawaii in First Day of Round Robin Tournament

BOISE, Idaho In their final home weekend of the 2009 regular season, the No. 19-ranked Boise State men’s tennis team started off with a bang, defeating two Western Athletic Conference opponents on Friday at the Appleton Tennis Center. The Broncos began their day with a 7-0 win over Utah State followed by a 6-1 win over Hawaii in the evening.


The Broncos are one of six WAC teams that are in Boise to play dual matches just one week before the WAC Conference Championships. Other teams include No. 46-ranked Fresno State, No. 66-ranked Nevada, New Mexico State, Utah State and Hawaii.


The Broncos started their day off with a 10 a.m. match against Utah State where they picked up a 7-0 win in the first match of nine hosted by the Broncos this weekend. Ending in nearly a perfect match, the Broncos won all their singles matches in two-straight sets and dropped only one doubles match. Seniors Stanley Sarapanich and Clancy Shields kicked-off the day with an 8-3 win over Jakob Apslund and Bryan Marchant in the No. 1 doubles match. Senior Blane Shields and freshman Freddy Walsh picked up the second doubles win for the Broncos, defeating Mike Banks and Amit Maharaj, 8-2, in the No. 2 match. The Aggies’ Jordan Barlow and Alex Thatcher were able to sneak by Boise State’s Erik Sheldon and Nick Gourley in the No. 3 doubles match, defeating the Bronco pair 7-6 (3) for USU’s only victory of the match.


In singles play against Utah State, sophomore Stefan Simikic had a near perfect win of 6-0, 6-1 over Barlow in the No. 6 spot. In the No. 2 match, No. 82-ranked James Meredith followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marchant while No. 74-ranked Kean Feeder defeated Apslund 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 match. Sheldon earned a strong 6-2, 6-2 victory over Thatcher in the No. 5 match to clinch the win for the Broncos. Freshman Cristian Hodel battled to a 6-4, 6-3 win over Maharaj in the No. 3 spot while junior Matt Solomon fought off Banks in the No. 4 match, winning 6-3, 7-5.


In their second match of the day, the Broncos made quick work of Hawaii’s doubles teams, sweeping all three matches and clinching the doubles point. Blane Shields and Solomon were the first to earn a win over the Rainbow Wahine, downing Craig Faulk and Sascha Heinemann, 8-1, in the No. 3 match. No. 39-ranked Kean Feeder and James Meredith were able to pick up an 8-1 win over Jeff Fitch and Leo Rosenberg in the No. 1 match to clinch the doubles point. Sarapanich and Clancy Shields rounded out the doubles play with an 8-3 win over Dennis Lajola and Andy Weber in the No. 2 match.


In singles play, the Broncos jumped to a quick 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win by Blane Shields over Phillipp Eberhard in the No. 6 match and a win by No. 74-ranked Feeder in the No. 1 match, defeating Lajola, 6-4, 6-4. Hawaii’s Heinemann was able to earn his team’s only point when he defeated Cristian Hodel 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 match. However, from there it was all Broncos with Meredith picking up a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over Rosenberg in the No. 3 match. Sarapanich continued the trend when he defeated Fitch 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 5 spot to put the Broncos up 5-1. In the final singles match of the night, No. 26-ranked Clancy Shields fought off Andy Weber in the No. 2 match, winning a barburner of a fight with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).


With the pair of wins the Broncos hit a 20-win season, recording a 20-7 record thus far. They also improved to 5-0 in WAC matches and 13-5 at home. They conclude their regular season home schedule on Saturday evening with a 5 p.m. match against No. 46-ranked Fresno State. Four seniors, Clancy Shields, Blane Shields, Sarapanich and Feeder, will be honored for senior night prior to the match.
