Broncos Drop No. 62 Fresno State 4-3
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 22 Boise State University men’s tennis team defeated No. 62 Fresno State 4-3, Saturday, at the Appleton Tennis Center to collect its 24th win of the season and improve to 14-5 versus nationally ranked opponents this season.
Unlike the majority of previous victories, the Boise State team failed to capture the doubles point to begin the match.
Piotr Dilaj and Luke Shields, the No. 52 doubles team in the country, fell at No. 1 to Jakub Cech and Mirko Zapletal 8-4.
Clancy Shields and Steve Robertson avenged their loss to Fresno State in the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Championship by defeating Charles Irie and Tejesvi Veerepalli 9-7, to even doubles up at 1-1.
With the doubles point on the line, Blake Boswell and Eric Roberson faced off against the Fresno State duo of Taylor Leiby and Rudolf Siwy but fell 8-4, giving the doubles point to the Bulldogs.
The competition then turned to doubles where the Broncos needed to take four of six singles matches to win the dual meet.
Clancy Shields collected the first match point for Boise State at No. 2 singles when he knocked off Siwy in straight sets 6-4 and 6-2 to earn his 23rd singles victory of the year.
Luke Shields followed with a straight set victory of his own to take the match from Cech 7-5 and 6-3, while giving Boise State the 2-1 match advantage.
At No. 5 singles, Steve Robertson dropped just his third match of the dual season when he fell to Veerepalli 6-4 and 6-3, as Fresno State evened the match at 2-2.
Blake Boswell earned his 22nd victory of the year as he ousted Irie at No. 4 singles 6-3 and 7-5, to give Boise State the one point advantage.
With the match on the line and the eyes of hundreds of fans following his every move, Roberson responded with the heart of a champion and earned the clinching match point for the Broncos with the 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3 victory over Flavio Mollinedo.
Even with the match secure, Dilaj did not want to give an inch to Zapletal as he battled the Fresno State player to a third set tiebreaker but fell 4-6, 6-0 and 7-6 (6).
The win was the third straight for Boise State over Fresno State dating back to 2005 and including the dramatic 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs in last seasons WAC Championship.
The Broncos have another match Saturday, Apr. 14, against Utah State beginning at 6:00 p.m.
