Broncos Shutout Weber State in Regular Season Home Finale
BOISE, Idaho - The No. 50 ranked Boise State men's tennis team wrapped up its 2011 regular season home schedule in successful fashion, Saturday (April 2) evening, as the Broncos earned a 7-0 shutout win over Weber State at the BOAS Indoor Tennis Complex to finish 2-0 on the weekend.
Boise State, which opened Saturday with a 7-0 win over Montana State, improves to 13-10 overall (1-1 Western Athletic Conference) following the two shutout victories. The Broncos continued their strong play against the Wildcats (4-10) in the Saturday night cap as they swept all three doubles matches before winning the six singles matches in straight sets.
In doubles, Michael Gilliland and Erik Sheldon got things rolling for Boise State with an 8-2 win over Caio Poitena and Peter Ramstromer Pello at No. 3. The Broncos would clinch the doubles point next at No. 2 as Andy Bettles and Filipp Pogostkin knocked off Landon Barlow and Dave Hintze, 8-3, for their 10th doubles win in a row.
Jeff Mullen and Nathan Sereke managed to complete the sweep for Boise State in the final doubles match of the night with an 8-5 win over Oliver Good and Simon Unger at No. 1.
The Broncos carried their momentum into singles competition and never looked back, cruising to three quick wins to clinch the dual victory. Mullen would extend the Boise State lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 3 as he knocked off Poitena, 6-2, 6-0. He was followed by Sereke who beat Hintze, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 to put the Broncos on the verge of securing the dual win.
Pogostkin would be the next Boise State player off the court with a win, as he beat Unger, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 to clinch the team victory for the Broncos.
Sheldon, Bettles and Freddy Walsh also each finished off their opponents in straight sets following the team win to extend the final score to 7-0 and complete the fifth shutout victory of the season for Boise State. Sheldon beat Good, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6, while Bettles knocked off Barlow, 7-6 (3), 6-1, at No. 2 and Walsh topped Pello, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5. With his win at No. 2 Bettles has now won eight consecutive singles matches.
With the pair of wins the Broncos improve to 8-2 at home this season, which bodes well for the men as they are set to host the WAC Championships at the end of April. Before hosting the conference tournament Boise State does have six matches left to play on the road to close out the regular season schedule, however. The Broncos are off next week before traveling to California to face Stanford, Fresno State and Hawai'i, April 14-17.
