BOISE, Idaho - The No. 50 ranked Boise State men's tennis team earned its fifth consecutive win, Saturday (April 2) afternoon, as the Broncos completed a 7-0 sweep of Montana State at the BOAS Indoor Tennis Complex to improve to 8-2 at home this spring.
Boise State (12-10 overall, 1-1 Western Athletic Conference) hosted the Bobcats (6-9) as part of a two dual regular season home finale for the Broncos on Saturday. Boise State has played a stretch of 10 consecutive home duals, during which time the Broncos have started to gain a great deal of momentum.
On Saturday the men continued to roll with a sweep of all three doubles matches before going six for six in singles competition as well.
Jeff Mullen and Nathan Sereke got things going for Boise State in doubles action as the duo knocked off Pawel Turzanski and Alberto Fuentes, 8-1, at No. 1 to put the doubles point within reach. Erik Sheldon and Michael Gilliland would capture the doubles point for the Broncos next at No. 3 as they beat Prithiv Sivasubramaniam and Kenny Dodd, 8-3, to secure a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
Boise State wasn't done in doubles competition however, as Andrew Bettles and Filipp Pogostkin would beat Markus Schleuter and Diego Campos Contreras, 8-4, at No. 2 to complete the clean sweep.
The Broncos continued to cruise in singles action as they would win five matches in straight sets to put the team victory out of reach. Sereke managed to extend the Boise State lead to 2-0 with the first singles win of the day as he beat Schleuter, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3. He was followed by Bettles who knocked off Fuentes, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 to put the Broncos one win away from clinching the dual.
It wouldn't take Pogostkin long to score the fourth and decisive point for Boise State, as he beat Turzanski, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 to lock up the team win.
With the dual victory in hand the Broncos continued to build on their team lead as Freddy Walsh and Erik Sheldon completed straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 to put Boise State ahead 6-0 over MSU. Walsh topped Contreras, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 before Sheldon took down Sivasubramaniam, 6-4, 7-6 (5), at No. 5.
Michael Gilliland would need a full third set tie breaker to conclude the 7-0 sweep for the Broncos, but managed to hold off Dodd for a 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 win at No. 6 to keep Boise State perfect on the day.
The Broncos will look to keep their momentum going and conclude their regular season home schedule on a six dual winning streak when they host Weber State in the Saturday night cap. Boise State is scheduled to meet the Wildcats at 5 p.m. at BOAS.
